Why Are My Gutters Not Working?

Your rain gutters are an important part of your homes water diversion system. The gutters help to drain water from your roof efficiently away from your home. When they malfunction it can be frustrating and often leave you scratching your head. Here are a few ways to troubleshoot your gutter system.

1) They are just full of debris. This is the most obvious and can be remedied by a thorough cleaning.

2) If cleaning them did not work- check your downspouts. The easiest way to test them is a by flushing each one with a garden hose. If the water does not clear them out continue to disassemble the elbows of your downspout. Often these become packed with nasty debris and need to be tapped on a solid surface to loosen the debris.

3) If step 1 and 2 did not work then you may have bigger issues. If you still have a hose handy fill up the gutter and see where the water goes. If it flows in the opposite direction of the drain then you will need to adjust your gutters pitch. This involves either adjusting current fasteners or full removal/re hang.

4) If at this point your gutters still do not work it may be time to call out a gutter professional.
